How
to Make Photo
Magnets & Magnetic Signs
I
recycle old calendar refrigerator magnets
to
make photo magnets and magnetic signs. I will show you how you can
Make
Your Own Photo Magnets and Magnetic Signs.
The
technique I use to make these fridge
photo magnets and magnetic signs is to use
double sided tape (or carpet tape) to attach a photo or computer
printed message to a recycled fridge magnet. This technique is
discussed in length on our How to
Make Stickers page.
Although the emphasis
of Make
Your Own Photo
Magnets and Magnetic Signs is making computer
generated magnetic signs, the methods and techniques are the same for
homemade magnetic signs and handcrafted magnetic signs.
Often when dealing with
a service oriented business, they will
advertise their services using a calendar fridge magnet or a
business card fridge magnet. Some calendar fridge magnets
are as large as a full sheet or paper and can be cut to any size and
shape.
Although these magnet
reminders will stick to any ferrous surface
(fridge, stove, steel door, steel car surfaces, etc) I will refer
to them as refrigerator magnets in this article because that is how
most of us think of them.
Hints and helpful techniques can
be found on our Sticker Making Tips
page.
Magnetic
Reminders
I
use magnetic signs that I make as magnetic reminder signs. Some say HOT! I
put it on the range when it is Hot. When not in use it
stays on
the side of the fridge. One says I am in the Back! I
but that on my steel front door went I am working in the garden so
visitors know I am home. I could go on but you get the idea.
To make these custom
magnetic signs or reminders I use recycled
refrigerator magnets. You know the calendar refrigerator magnets you
get from your neighborhood small businesses or the business card
refrigerator magnet you get in the mail. All these work equally well,
they are just different sizes.
I use my computer to
print the message on any custom paper stock I
choose. I like to select brilliant colors for my refrigerator magnetic
signs and magnetic reminders. You know it is hard to miss a hot pink
HOT! refrigerator magnet reminder even if it is the size of a business
card refrigerator magnet. You can use the techniques here to decorate
your refrigerator magnet any way you like, including attaching photos,
keepsakes and do-dads. Homemade magnetic reminders and handcrafted
magnetic reminders do not have to say anything as long as you know what
it means.
Let’s
get started on your Refrigerator
Photo Magnets.
Tools
you will need:
- Scissors
- Razor
knife\
Materials
you will need:
- Photo
- Select a photo you want to display on your Refrigerator.
- Calendar
refrigerator magnet - see below for selection ideas.
- Double
sided tape - also known as carpet tape. *NOTE:
Carpet tape is designed to be permanent and may mar anything it comes
into contact with it. Avoid the “cloth
type” tape it does not look as nice and is harder to work
with.
- Mineral
spirits to clean glue from tools. - I use odorless.
*NOTE:
Some glue from the carpet
tape will be transferred to your tools. Periodic cleaning will give
your custom sticker a nice clean cut edge.
- Framing
Material - If you would like to frame your Refrigerator Photo Magnets
select a light weight material like balsa, foam or styrene.
Selecting
a Magnet for your Photo Magnets
- Your
calendar refrigerator magnets should be the same size as your photo or
larger if you intent to frame it. If you select calendar refrigerator
magnets smaller than your photo, the borders will fray over time.
- Not
all calendar refrigerator magnets are of equal strength. Most calendar
refrigerator magnets will be strong enough to hold a photo only. If you
are going to add additional items to your fridge photo magnets
you will need stronger calendar fridge magnets. To test the
strength of your calendar fridge magnets, place the materials to
be used in a baggy and tape it to your calendar fridge magnet and
test it on your fridge.
Make
Your Own Photo Magnets in 6 easy steps
- Select
your Photo or other artwork.
- Dry
fit your refrigerator photo magnets. Make sure your calendar
refrigerator magnet is the correct size. Save the final trimming of the
edges until all photos are attached to your finished refrigerator photo
magnets.
- If
a frame is to be used, construct it now. If you are mounting the frame
on the calendar refrigerator magnet, the photo should be trimmed
smaller then the calendar refrigerator magnet and the frame placed on
the calendar refrigerator magnet. If you are mounting the
photo magnet inside the frame be sure the calendar refrigerator magnet
will protrude from the back of the frame to make contact with the
refrigerator.
- Place
the carpet tape on the front
of the calendar refrigerator magnet. Be sure to extend the tape to the
edges. If you are mounting the frame to the calendar refrigerator
magnet, the photo should be smaller then the calendar refrigerator
magnet to expose the carpet tape for frame attachment.
- Position
the photo on the calendar refrigerator magnet as you did with your dry
fit.
- Cut
your refrigerator photo magnets to shape. Use any sharp good
quality scissors to trim the edges of your refrigerator photo
magnets. If these are handcrafted photo magnets you may want
to cut them to a unique shape. A butterfly fridge magnet for
example.
You’re
done!
Place
your new refrigerator photo magnets and any ferrous surface and enjoy.
